Cultural Heritage Research

Heritage Stewardship and Archaeology Program

The Heritage Stewardship and Archaeology Program takes a broad range and multi-disciplinary approach to Cultural Heritage research and management.
In addition to archaeological sites, we recognize a full range of cultural heritage sites important to the Stó:lō community, including Transformation Sites, various Place Names and Spirited Places as defined in the Stó:lō Heritage Policy.
Through our program, we actively help regulate cultural heritage and archaeological work in S’olh Téméxw (Stó:lō Territory). At the same time, we actively participate in all aspects of cultural heritage and archaeology from research to resource management, collections curation to repatriation, interpretation to public involvement and cross-cultural awareness – both on reserve and off.
Staff is equipped with our in-house spatial cultural database, and our technicians regularly conduct development-related assessments within S’olh Téméxw. Through Cultural Heritage Impact and Overview Assessments, we identify and develop management plans for the respectful treatment of numerous cultural sites and areas.

The SRRMC is actively involved with local, national, and international university programs to gather, analyze, and share Stó:lō specific information.
The goal of this research is to foster a better understanding of Stó:lō culture and heritage in all its forms.

We host the biannual Ethnohistory Field School in partnership with the Universities of Victoria and Saskatchewan.
Students, working in close collaboration with Stó:lō communities, individuals and Elders, conduct research and share their findings and conclusions in reports which can be accessed in the Stó:lō Library and Archives.
